Summary of Services

Leadership Development and Capacity-Building Consultations

MITUL provides leadership and organizational development services to teacher union locals.   We contract with interested teacher union locals to engage in a process of self-analysis, leadership development and capacity building.

MITUL coordinators draw on the talents of experienced, progressive teacher union leaders who can work with teacher union locals as coaches, trainers, facilitators, planners and organizational consultants. We utilize the experience and talents of veteran progressive leaders within the Teacher Union Reform Network as well as other local union leaders whose skills and knowledge base can be of use to their colleagues.

Information, Analysis and Advocacy for Progressive Teacher Unionism

MITUL engages in broad communication, education and advocacy around the role of teacher unions in defining and leading public education reform. We offer a progressive vision and analysis for teacher unions, opinion leaders, policy-makers and advocacy organizations. We engage with our colleagues-- at the NEA, the AFT, TURN, and with public education advocates nationally—through web-based and real dialogue, conferencing, and seminars; publishing opinion pieces and other print materials;; and by sponsoring or convening national conversations about key issues in public education and education unionism.

National Cohort Experience

In addition to receiving a number of site visits, feedback reports, help with strategic planning, and facilitation of internal development processes, locals are invited to participate in a national cohort experience with other local unions serving in an informal network of “critical friends.” The cohort engages virtually and at an annual retreat in intensive professional development and planning activities.

Information, Analysis and Advocacy for Progressive Teacher Unionism

MITUL engages in communication, education and advocacy, promoting a strong role for teacher unions in defining and leading public education reform – within teacher unions and with opinion leaders, policy-makers and advocacy organizations. Through print and direct communication, MITUL aims to contribute to a national conversation about the role of teacher unions in key issues in public education.

Other Activities

MITUL produces a variety of curricular and practical materials for use in our cohort training and development sessions.  Some of these materials are available on the website.

MITUL consultants and volunteers participate in invitational panels and other events to provide a progressive education union perspective.
