MITUL received start-up funding in 2005-06 from five independent foundations.
- The George Gund Foundation
- The Joyce Foundation
- The Broad Foundation
- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Union locals that work with MITUL pay themselves for at least part of the cost of participation by their leader-teams in the institute. The NEA and the AFT have provided support to subsidize the involvement of their locals.
More recently, over the past few years, MITUL has received funding from the Ford Foundation, specifically to work with the NEA and its affiliates. But the primary source of funding for MITUL's work comes from union locals who often raise funds from local donors.
